"You cannot give these powerful techniques to sales people." He shouted at me in the crowded coffee shop. People were staring at my former colleague.
I had just told him of the psychological based sales training I was providing as The Sales Wizard. His anger was immense; he said I was betraying his profession.
"Why not?", I responded, "Sales training has included techniques like 'feel/felt/found' for years; I taught those many years myself. What I am doing now is enhancing sales peoples' existing knowledge. Teaching them that if a prospect speaks from the visual mode, then 'I clearly see what you mean' is more rapport building than ' I know exactly how you feel.'
You regularly use these techniques in your practice."
His retort was: "That's different; you are giving away the secrets of our profession. You are corrupting proven psychological techniques by applying them to sales training. The use of NLP, Body Language and hypnotic phrases for commercial gain is offensive to me. You are teaching outright manipulation and you must stop."
The conversation was too heated; I presented him a different perspective.
"I agree, and manipulation for strictly selfish purposes is offensive to me too. However, when applied for a 'win/win' outcome, I see it as beneficial. There is subtle manipulation all around ... women wear lipstick and perfume, men cut their hair and shave and those are okay, right? So, as long as there is no deception, what is the harm in learning to present a product or service in the best possible light?"
"Well, I can somewhat see where you are coming from yet I still have reservations." He was calming down.
"Okay, and I appreciate that. Please know I do caution my clients that learning to influence others to your way of thinking carries a responsibility for ethical use. And I find the sales people attracted to my training and coaching are sincere, ethical and customer benefit oriented."
That resonated with him; he relaxed and said: "I still have some concern about sharing our secrets, however I know you to be creditable and authentic. So, as long as you are cautioning your clients in the use of these highly effective techniques, I accept your word."
The confrontation was defused; I left unharmed.
